Kailua Dash and Splash Biathlon 2007
By Louis Tomsic
The Kailua Dash and Splash Biathlon was held on Sunday
April 22, 2007. The race course starts with a 2.8 mile loop around
Lanikai CCW and finishes with a 800 meter swim point to point from the
Kailua Pier to the other enterance to Kailua Beach Park. The race can
be done by individuals as well as teams. I enjoy doing the team event
where I run and my wife swims.
The run around Lanakai is nice rolling hills for the first mile, a nice
flat mile stretch and then the last part of the course is an uphill
with a 400 meter downhill finish to the handoff point to enter the
water at the beach. This years swim at the beach was slightly choppy
and my wife said she swallowed some seawater as she fished her fastest
time of the year. Rounding the last boey, there is a 50 meter sprint
left up the beach to the finsh line.
The race refreshments include oranges, bananas and jamba juice. Coupons
to Kailua's Mama's Pizza were handed out at the race. I used mine and
enjoyed some fine pizza after the race. Nice medals were given to age
division winners and several prizes were given away for answering local
triva questions correctly asked by the race director.
