Fort DeRussy Biathlon 2007
By Louis Tomsic
The Fort DeRussy Biathlon
was held on Saturday, March 3, 2007.
The weather was warm and sunny to start. The race course is one
of the most unique in Hawaii. It runs along Waikiki Beach and Fort
DeRussy Park over paved roads and grass doing 2 loops for a 5K.
The swims avaliable are a long course 1000m or a short
course 400m. During the swim, each swimmer can always see another buoy
so the course is clearly marked. The swim course is also in water
shallow enough so that when you look down, you can see fish and
actually see that you are making progress in the water.
This best part of this race is the post refreshments
because this is one of the only races in Hawaii where they serve bagels
with cream cheese after the biathlon.
It is also worth mentioning that the Fort DeRussy
Biathlon sets the example of what is possible in inspiring kids to
maintain a healthy life style. The race organizers have set up a short
run and swim course for kids in the different age groups.
Spectators who wonder down Waikiki Beach line up in large crowds to
watch the kids run. They run with alot of heart and make thier parents
proud. There should be much more events for kids that are a great as
the Fort DeRussy Biathlon.
