Irish Sprint and Stride 10k 2007 Review
By Louis Tomsic
The 27th Irish Spint and Stride 10k 2007 10K was run at 7A on March 17,
2007 starting at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. The Pearl Harbor
Visitor Center is sandwiched between the Arizona Memorial and the
Bowfin Memorial in Pearl Harbor. In earlier races, the course was along
the Pearl Harbor bike path out and back. This year the course did a CCW
loop around Ford Island. Construction on Ford Island in the past year
has seen the first asphalt road looping around the inner island in
decades. There are many construction sites where new Navy housing
will be built. Ford island is getting a complete island makeover. There
is also a new aviation museam on the island in an old airplane hangar
I saw as I was running past on the course. The race course is
slightly different from the Ford Island Bridge 10K run in that it
starts at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, goes past Richardson Pool,
up the hill and cuts to the right, running on Richardson Field through
a foot gate till you make a right turn on the Ford Island Bridge.
Today, it was not that windy so the race was very enjoyable over the
bridge.
About 100 runners entered the race. There were team and individual
competitions. Very nice Saint Patricks Day crystal medals were given
out in the age divisions. The t-shirts were excellent quality
with color graphics on front and back with a irish clover on the
sleeve. Each runner recieved a bottle of water when they finished.
Random prizes included several gift certificates to Runners HI in Aiea,
hats, socks and head warmers. At 9A, two young Irish Hawaiian
girls showed some classical Irish dancing. They did 2 dances to the
delight of the crowd. Visit the race website for more details.
