Iroquois Point 5k 2007 Review

Louis & Asti Tomsic after Iroquois Point 5k run.
By Louis Tomsic
The second annual Iroquois Point 5k run was held June
16,
2007. The event participation from the previous year doubled because of
the excellent work done by race director Steve Foster. The event had
nearly 500 participants this year. It is one of the few running event
held near Ewa. The race start was held up by nearly 15 minutes because
of the popularity of this event this year. The 5K is held in honor of
military veterans. It raises moneys so that no US veteran is ever
homeless.
The race course is flat and fast. The course makes many turns around the streets and small lakes in Iroquois
Point before arriving back at the beach park finish. Parking is
adequete but the later a runner arrives, the further away they have to
park from the start line. The lead vehicle was a bike driven by Steve
Foster so that the lead runner could not be lost among the many turns
on the course.
Race refreshments were outstanding! This is
one of the few races on Oahu that offers watermellon and cantelope
after the race along with bananas. Awards were given in 5 year age
divisions and top 3 winners recieved flower leis. Great music was
provided by Kaala Boys which made everyone get up dance. There were
many boths to explore which offered various services and an Army
Helecopter to get up and sit in.
I ate alot of watermellon and
throuroughly enjoyed myself at a wonderful run that I will be sure to
do again next year. I did hear that the event next year will be held on
Memorial day. The beach park is an excellent place to hold a picnic
after the race. I went down to a local store afterward getting a french
loaf and some cheese and enjoyed the rest of the day at the beach.
