Mac-A-Thon 2008
By Louis Tomsic The Big Island Mac-A-Thon was held on March 22, 2008 at 7A (7:30 Big Island time to make sure everyone who signed up got thier race numbers.) The timing was done by JTL timing using a new timing method that had a plastic bib behind the race number. Instead of having to give back a timing chip after the race, the plastic bib was given back.
To get to the race start from Kona, take highway 11 to highway 160 junction, turn right on highway 160 and continue approimately 3 miles to the start line at Puu Honua O Hanaunau Park (City of refuge) enterance. The race course is on a government road that extends from Honaunau Bay round trip to Napoopoo. The Mac-A-Thon offeres distances of 5K and 10K to run. Each race course is the same except the 5K turn around is halfway into the 10K course. Each course is an out and back course. The first half mile is slightly uphill. It is rolling down hill all the way to the 5K and 10K turn arounds. The 10K turn around is close once you can see some houses. There were water aid stations at the 1.5, 3, 4.5 mile markers. The course is run on one road starting near the City of Refuge heading towards Captain Cook. The last .2 miles of the 5K and 10K makes a right hand turn following the road to the race finish downhill. Entertainment after the race included an Easter egg hunt for the children.
There was also hula dancing prior to the award cerimony. The dances performed several routines and were excellent as everyone ate a delicious pancake breakfast. The pancake breakfast also included home made guava & passion fruit smoothies and fruit juice.
The Mac-A-Thon is the Big Island's oldest annual 5K and 10K race. It is also one of the oldest races in the Hawaiian Islands. The race is put on by the Keoua Canoe club. The 27th annual Mac-A-Thon was a delight to do this year. Everything is special about this race. The pancakes are as big as your plate filled with small mac nuts that made them taste so good.
